We had a great time at the Gardens by the Bay on Tuesday afternoon. Although it was slightly drizzling, it was cool and beautiful in the Flower Dome. Our focus for this learning journey was the “Maths Trail”.
The children were divided into small groups and they had to listen to the instructions given by their group leaders (the Parent Volunteers) as well as the teachers.
When we entered the Flower Dome, we were greeted by the different species of cacti and succulent plants. The children were very excited to identify the many different shapes of the cacti. Most of the cacti that they saw were circles and ovals. We estimated the height of a circular cactus and measured it using a long ruler. We found out that it was 10 centimetres tall!
Another fun activity was counting the steps we took to walk to a big tree in the dome. The children did a great job taking turns and counting their steps to reach the tree. They took at least 20 steps to reach it. Good counting, K1s!
Throughout the Maths trail, we spotted flowers of different colours, trees of different heights as well as plants of different shapes and sizes. We engaged in many other fun mathematical activities while exploring through the gardens of the Baobabs, Flower Fields, Mediterranean Garden, South African Garden and many more.
It was a wonderful day of counting and measuring at the Gardens by the Bay. We definitely look forward to many more fun Maths Trails!
If you go down to the woods today You're sure of a big surprise. If you go down to the woods today You'd better go in disguise!
For every bear that ever there was Will gather there for certain, Because today's the day the Teddy Bears have their picnic. (Song The Teddy Bear's Picnic by Anna Murray)
And that's exactly what we did. Our teddy bears went to the picnic with us and what a wonderful time we had. But where did we have our picnic? Don't worry...we didn't go down to the woods but we DID go down to our very own playground which we pretended to be a park (as we were learning about parks in Singapore). There, we played games and had a great time on the obstacle course. We especially enjoyed parachute play and playing hide and seek with our teddy bears. After all that play, everyone was hungry and ready to gather for the picnic where we ate our delicious snack. Whilst enjoying our picnic, we listened attentively to the story 'The Teddy Bear's Picnic' by Jimmy Kennedy and what a lovely story it was. At the end of the picnic, we remembered to tidy up the 'park' by picking up all the litter and throwing it into the bin. We were so tired from all the wonderful things we did at the picnic but we still had the energy to sing the “The Teddy Bear's song” as we skipped all the way back to our classroom. Great job, everyone...as well as the teddy bears for being such great company!
When the children were told that they were going to have cookery lesson, they were extremely excited! They made "Honey Joys" a popular snack served to guests during Hari Raya. There were only four ingredients used for this recipe; honey, butter, sugar and cornflakes! The children did a fantastic job mixing the ingredients together and then using a spoon to put the mixture into big and small paper cups. It was quite a challenging task, but they managed it very well with minimal spillage! Well done, K1s! As soon as I took out them out from the oven, they could not wait to bring their "Honey Joys" home! I hope everyone enjoyed it!
What a great party! It was wonderful to see the children come dressed in traditional malay and party clothes. It was such a colourful day! The children had a blast celebrating Racial Harmony and Hari Raya. As Singapore is a multi-racial country, they learnt about the importance of respecting each other's differences and living in harmony. They had fun learning to say "hello" in the different languages spoken in Singapore and singing as well as dancing to the song "The More We Get Together" in English and Mandarin.
The children also learnt the significance of Hari Raya to the muslim community in Singapore. The learnt a few simple traditional malay dance steps called "Asli" and "Inang" and how to "salam", which is to shake hands with friends when meeting them during this special occasion. I'm sure with all the information shared, the children had a fruitful learning experience on our dual celebration day!

This week, we went to the "movies"! The children were excited to share their experience of watching a movie and their favourite movie characters. We also looked at pictures of past and present movie theatres, discussed the different places in the theatre and most importantly, the do's and don'ts when in the theatre.
Next, the classroom was transformed into a movie theatre. The children role-played pretending to buy the tickets at the ticketing booth. They learnt to ask for their tickets politely by indicating the name of the movie and the number of tickets they would like to purchase. I was glad to hear them say "please" and "thank you".
When they entered the theatre, the children had to look for their correct numbered seats. They helped each other out and quietened down when it was finally time for the movie to start. They watched two clips - one in colour and the other in black and white and later made comparisons. Guess which clip they enjoyed? A black and white Charlie Chaplin's movie!
