Earth Day
Earth Day falls on the 22nd of April every year. To commemorate this day, the children came to school all dressed in green last Friday. Some of the children put their creative fingers to work at home and came to school showcasing their beautiful and artist hats made of recycled materials, flowers and leaves.
During the day, the children learnt about the environmental issues that the world faces today. These issues includes air, land and sea pollution. To save our Earth, we need to practice the 3Rs – Reduce, reuse and recycle.
After our interactive lesson about saving our Earth, the children wrote about what their little hands can do to help our Earth. The children also located the recycling bins in the school and practiced the good habit of recycling plastic, paper and metal.
We pledge to save our Earth!

Learning Journey
On Monday, Ranger Ooz shared with us some facts about the colugo, pangolin, stick insect and long tailed meerkat. We learnt how to identify the female and male stick insects and we stroked the stick insect that Ranger Ooz brought.It felt really rough! We touched the skin of the reticulated python (the longest snake in the world) and it felt rough too!

Singapore's first dedicated creative space for children aged 1 - 12, Playeum's Children's Centre for Creativity consists of a series of interactive spaces incorporating hands-on, participative opportunities, custom-built installations and technology. It refreshes its hands-on exhibition twice a year. This week, we named different flower parts such as flower, stem, leave and roots. The flower consists of petals and stamens. We teamed up and dramatized as petals and stamens. We also sang songs about flowers, learn words relating to flowers as well as designed our own flowers. It was an enriching week!

Robots
This week was research week and the children started the week by discussing what they wanted to learn about. They decided on the topic of robots.
The children asked questions that helped in the research of the topic. These include, ‘What are robots?’, ‘How can they help us?’ and ‘Why do we need robots?’ After reading books about robots and learning about them on the interactive whiteboard, the children learnt many interesting facts about robots and some of these include:
1. Robots are machines and they can be programmed by computers.
2. Robots can be used to explore places that are not easily accessible to humans, eg. Space and the deep oceans.
3. Robots can help to do dangerous jobs such as cleaning up oil spills in the ocean and exploring volcanos.
4. Some robots look like humans and some do not.
5. Robots that help us today include drones and vacuum robots.
For mathematics, the children did addition of robots. It was a fun and easy way to introduce the concept of addition!

BBQ Party
What have the children been up to in class for the past 2 weeks? The children started a mini project and had been decorating the role play corner in the class.
Incorporating the inquiry based and hi-scope approach into this mini project, we started by discussing what we wanted to do for our role play corner. The children decided on having a barbecue corner in the class. We brainstormed on what was needed for the barbecue corner and we posed questions such as, ‘What kind of food is needed for our barbecue corner?’ and ‘How are we going to create a barbecue pit?’ Then, we worked cooperatively with one another creating the barbecue pit and added charcoal and fire to it, moulded and painted clay to make a variety of food items, as well as, decorated the role play corner with signs and balloons.
After the corner was beautifully done up, the children were spontaneous in starting the barbecue party by starting up the fire, serving food, pouring drinks and taking turns to barbecue.
It was splendid to see that the process not only displayed children’s prior knowledge to barbecuing but it also added on new knowledge through interaction with one another.
