10 Month

Big Smile
Posted by PicasaYour baby may be working on walking this month, holding on to whatever he can to help him cruise through the house. To keep him safe, make sure that you secure free standing bookshelves, lamps, and other unstable furniture that might tumble when he grabs it.

Leave his feet bare too - that'll help him keep his balance as he takes those first stumbling steps. And of course, stay close by to lend a helping hand. Remember, babies have their own individual timetables. At this age, some babies will begin to do things much earlier or later than others.

Express herself

Waiting For Great Aunt And.

If you can tune in to your baby's babble in the coming weeks, you just might recognise a word or two. Babies typically say their first words (often "mama" or "dada") some time between nine and 15 months. Even if your baby's not "talking", (and some don't "talk" until much later than this), she's probably amused by the sounds she makes and may express herself in other ways.

This may be by shouting for your attention, screaming in frustration or dropping a toy just to watch it fall. Try diverting her from activities you would rather not pursue with a game of peek-a-boo. She will probably be able to play along now instead of just watching.

Personality

Your baby's personality is really emerging now. She may be very social, granting broad smiles to everyone she meets, or a little more shy, hiding her face when well-meaning strangers try to engage her. Your baby may charge ahead boldly or assess the situation carefully before accepting others. She might be even tempered or switch her moods quite dramatically.

She'll gesture for your attention and may even wave goodbye when she sees you head for the door. She's also developing a mind of her own, which you may run up against when you try to put her in her car seat or buggy.

On the floor

Try getting down on the floor for a minute and seeing the world from your nine month old's point of view. That space behind the sofa could be an entire undiscovered country. That kitchen cupboard could contain... anything. He wants to explore but he's also learning how big the world is, which explains two other traits that come with his growing curiosity: clinginess and a growing fear of strangers. He's learning you could go far away from him, which is a frightening thought for someone so tiny!

This phase, when he wants to be near you all the time, can be very wearing but it will pass more quickly if you don't push him to be independent too soon. Day by day his confidence and independence will grow, as you are there to support and reassure him

baby's vision

Your baby's vision – previously about 20/40 at best – is now almost adult-like in its clarity and depth perception. Though your baby's short-range sight is still best, his long-range vision is good enough to recognise people and objects across a room. He may see a toy on the other side of the room and try to crawl toward it. His eyes are also probably close to their final colour, though you may see subtle changes later.

Words

The torrent of words your baby has been hearing since birth is beginning to work its magic, although his understanding of words far outpaces his ability to use them. His babbling has turned to jabber and is probably starting to sound more like real words, phrases and sentences. Your baby thinks he's saying something, so respond as if he really is!

Your baby still comprehends more from your tone than from your actual words, though. He can understand when he's pleased you, so offer specific praise, such as, "You’re a clever boy picking up the rattle". The more you talk to your baby – while preparing dinner, driving or getting dressed – the more he learns about communication.
