The children were encouraged to brainstorm various topics that they would like to work on for our project week. They listed a few, keeping in mind the theme of the term which was “Who do I share the world with?”. After much discussion, as a class, they decided to find out more about the moon! I think they are still fascinated about the Universe!

Throughout their research and inquiry, they found out a lot of interesting facts about the moon. They learnt that just like Earth, other planets have moons too. Mars has two moons while Jupiter has a total of 63 confirmed moons (as of 2009). The children also watched a video clip of a rocket launching into space. They had fun counting backwards from ten all the way to one. Blast off! They also learnt that man had set foot on the moon and the first ever astronaut to land on it was Neil Amstrong.

Later on, the children were encouraged to think of a few activities they would like to do pertaining to the topic. They suggested making a rocket ship and using playdough to create the moon! They had fun painting their rocket ships and used scrap materials to add the special features like windows and even astronauts on their piece of art. As for the playdough activity, scientific elements were integrated into it. Each child was given a plate and a marble. As the moon rotated around the Earth, the children had to focus and spin their marble around the moon. They worked very hard to keep the “moon” on their plate as they moved it. Good control, K1 friends! Watch the video in my next post!

Overall, it was a fun and meaningful project week! Well done, K1s!
